Horizon 2020 is the largest European fund for research and innovation. The fund, which was established by the EU ran from 2014-2020 with a budget of 79 billion Euros.
The aim of the fund was to support world-leading science and innovation throughout Europe and encourage the collaboration between public and private sectors therefore supporting economic growth and the job market.
What happens after Brexit on 31 January 2020?
UK scientists, researchers and businesses have so far been encouraged to bid for and lead projects in Horizon 2020, even after the UK exited the EU on 31 January 2020, this included Horizon 2020 calls that extend into 2021 such as the Green Deal Call which closes on 26 January 2021.
From January 2021, Horizon 2020 will be known as Horizon Europe and will run from 2021-2027. As part of the Brexit agreement reached between the UK and the EU, the UK has announced that it will associate to Horizon Europe subject to sanction of the overall deal and finalisation of the regulations.
If you already have Horizon 2020 funding
Funding for most Horizon 2020 projects will continue for the project’s lifetime – even those that finished after 31 December 2020. Payment arrangements will stay the same, and UK participants can continue to lead projects.
How we can Shaw Gibbs help
If you are applying for funding through a grant it is possible that the project costs will need a grant audit. This is something we have extensive experience in and can therefore deliver this in an efficient manner. Our dedicated Grant Audit team are familiar with the standardised paperwork and processes agreed between the funding bodies and the accountancy profession. Our team can talk you through the process and help you avoid some of the pitfalls. Alongside this, we provide advice on the relationship between grant funding and Research and Development (R&D) tax relief programmes.
We also work closely with contacts who can assist with grant applications.
